Meals on Wings

BCH Interim Dean, Mei Zhao, Ph.D. is matching all gifts across Brooks College of Health Giving Day projects, dollar for dollar, up to $2,600 total. Double your impact today!

The Meals on Wings program recovers food from all of the local hospital systems.  The food is repackaged into healthy meals and delivered to low-income homebound senior citizens three days a week.

A team of students, faculty and staff coordinate the program and volunteer to recover food, package meals and deliver with a smile!

Why Your Support is Important

MOW operates strictly on a donor-funded budget. Yet with support from the local community, we delivered over 50,000 meals in the past year. We have surpassed 140,000 meals since we began the program. We have also rescued 130,000 pounds of food that would have gone into the landfill.  Now more than ever, we need your help and support to make sure we can provide as many meals as possible.

More Than Just a Meal

Unfortunately, food insecurity is a growing trend for some of the most at-risk populations in our communities. However, the effects of food insecurity are more than nutritional. Not knowing where or when your next meal is coming from can have adverse psychological effects.

Meals on Wings has demonstrated that participants experience significant improvements in their nutritional status, nutrient intake, food security level, loneliness and mental well-being. Our research has also shown an increase in public service motivation and empathy scores in the students who participate. That makes this program a win on so many levels.
